As an obsessed TV addict, I’ve been known to read a bit too much into my stories. Because of that, I’m going to be supplementing my Wynonna Earp recaps (which go up on StarryMag.com Friday afternoons before the new episode) with some comments and analysis of this amazing show.
Normally these will be a bit longer but this week has been a dumpster fire (I just finished burying a bunny in my yard) and I haven’t had time to do half of what I need to. Anyways here are some ramblings on “Steel Bars and Stone Walls”
The Hat Makes the Man
As we all know the Hala, Devourer of Souls, snacked on Doc’s signature hat as Doc tried to protect Waverly. That hat has been with Doc from the times of Wyatt Earp and is a huge part of his identity. The identity he held on to through his captivity.
Wyatt and Doc had a falling out when Wyatt discovered that Doc made a deal to save his own life. Doc cared about Wyatt, but he always put himself first. Then the Stone Witch who saved him trapped him underground. When Doc escaped his prison, his sole mission was to kill the Stone Witch for what she did to him. He was so driven by vengeance that he was willing to side with the Revenants that killed his best friend for sport. He did horrible things to the Earp sisters, the descendants of his best friend, at the behest of Bobo. He dragged Levi outside the Ghost River Triangle for Bobo. He did shitty thing after shitty thing all in the name of his personal vendetta against the Stone Witch. Never would that Doc have taken on the burden of saving Dolls just so Wynonna wouldn’t have to carry the weight to two deaths of people she loves. Hell, that Doc wouldn’t have been caught dead in that Black Badge facility in the first place. That Doc wouldn’t have jumped in front of Waverly and allowed his hat to be eaten. The Doc Holliday we first met is a distant memory and this new Doc Holliday deserves a clean slate, and a new fucking hat.
All the stuff I wanted to talk about
- WayHaught (underboob, Waverly's taste, that fucking ax)
- Nicole just wanting to fit in
- Wynonna going all Clarke Griffin on us trying to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders so the people she loves don't have to
- Everything Rachel Skarsten
- Fun fact: signing in blood isn't legally binding (I know ancient contracts don't follow our laws but still)
